Position Overview

The Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators (NAME) is seeking an organized and detail-oriented individual to serve as the NW Compass Editor. The NW Compass is NAME’s regular email digest distributed to members across the Pacific Northwest region. This publication keeps members informed of NAME announcements, events, opportunities, and resources that support aquatic and marine education.

The Editor is responsible for curating, organizing, and distributing engaging, relevant content in a timely manner, maintaining consistency with NAME’s branding and professional standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Curate Content:
    Collect and review announcements, events, job postings, funding opportunities, educator resources, and other items of interest for NAME members. Content may come from:

    • Submissions to the Compass email address
    • Notices from NAME administration and/or chapter directors
    • Other relevant sources such as partner organizations or regional networks
  • Publish Regular Emails:
    Prepare and send NW Compass emails at least bi-weekly (every two weeks), or more frequently as needed, ensuring clear organization and readability.
  • Monitor and Respond to Inquiries:
    Check the Compass email account regularly, respond to member inquiries when appropriate, and forward or refer messages to relevant NAME contacts as needed.
  • Maintain Branding and Quality:
    Format and design each email to align with NAME’s established branding and style guidelines. Ensure a professional tone, accurate information, and a visually appealing layout.
  • Collaborate and Communicate:
    Coordinate with the NAME Board, admin team, and regional chapter representatives to ensure timely inclusion of organizational announcements and opportunities. Attend quarterly NAME Board meetings (virtual option available).

Qualifications

  • Strong editing skills with attention to detail and clarity.
  • Familiarity with email layout, formatting, and best practices for readability and accessibility.
  • Ability to learn and work within NAME’s content management system (Member365) to create and send emails through the backend interface (training will be provided).
  • Basic understanding of branding, digital communication, and design consistency.
  • Ability to work independently, meet deadlines, and maintain consistent communication with the NAME leadership team.
  • Interest in or knowledge of aquatic and marine education is an asset.

Compensation and Terms

This is a part-time contract position with an annual stipend of $2,500 USD, payable in two installments:

  • $1,250 in January
  • $1,250 in July

The position is based on an estimated workload of approximately 8 hours per month. The contract will be reviewed and renewed annually at the NAME Fall Board Meeting for the following calendar year.
